Very rare to find a mid 30’s solid peg Gretsch resonator in Australia. Gretsch Model 19 Resonator, dating c1935 . Pre serial number (Gretsch serial numbers started 1939) confirms its early production.
Love the ’30’s solid headstock. We had a Dobro c1933 sold peg recently. Nearly all resonators from this era feature a standard slotted headstock, making this solid-head Gretsch a rare find indeed.
This Gretsch is very original including the original cone. still has the sewing pins to position the cone. The cone removal pics are pre cleaning. There is a slight open grain piece on the inside on the very top lamination, which is not a crack and was always there from manufacture. Of coarse not visible when the cone and cover are fitted.
Shape: Close to “00” size with a 14” lower bout. 12 Fret neck mount.
Body: Painted-on faux-binding.
Scale: 25”
Radius: Flat.
Fretboard: Stained Ebony.
Neck: V Shaped
Neck Width: 1 ¾” at the nut. 2 5/32” at the 12th fret.
Weight: 4lb 9.6oz
Resonator: Dobro “Poinsettia” Spider
This neck is extremely straight for no truss rod.
There are other small nicks and blemishes, as expected for a well-played 90 year old guitar.
Cone and tailpiece trapeze are original. The cone screws are all original. The original tailpiece flathead screws. The Gretsch has had new frets installed some time ago. Original tuners with the original screws. Recent hard case.
The action in medium and plays well. Plenty of saddle to lower if required. The sound is light and colourful. A very happy guitar!
