This guitar had spent most of it’s happy playing life in the tropics. The original owner had purchased the Strat new from Jay Stanley Johnsons (QVB) Sydney in 1964. It is a kind of Dakota Red / Cimarron Red. On Arrival to the store (from the original purchases son, pictured with his dad with the very fresh 1964 Strat), the neck bolts were stuck, the figured Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and frets were super worn and the middle pickup had clocked off.
The guitar went down to famous guitar builder/luthier Piers Crocker for incredible love to the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard (see pics) with expertly fitted tall vintage frets, new nut and came back a winner.
The middle pickup went to Sliders for a rewind with Rod McQueen, wow! The end result was magnificent, and incredible resonant lively warm hollow honky Strat, Impossible to walk past.
We won the fight with three of the neck screws, the fourth needed help and a dowel was the outcome, expertly done by local Keith Cornish. (See pics) That enabled us to pack the neck and raise the grub screws/adjust the original saddles, and end the prickly palm.
The puzzling thing is why this guitar was repainted? The Strat has the factory Fiesta Red underneath the top Dakota/Cimarron red coat with grey undercoat. (see pics) Does one remove the Red repaint from 1964? To make it a factory Fiesta Red as shipped to Australia. The pickguard also being a later 1964 white, possibly added when repainted? Either-way, this is one of the most colourful sounding Strats Ive had the pleasure of bumping into. Thanks to Piers Crocker, a real great playing old Strat.
