Our Sete Cordas (7 String) model is a Brazilian style guitar with an additional lower bass string, inspired by our love for Brazilian guitar music. This type of guitar has origins from Russia and has been used extensively through Brazil’s musical history particularly in Choro. Choro is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro. Despite its name which directly translates to “cry”, the music often has a fast and happy rhythm. It is characterized by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, and is full of syncopation and counterpoint. Choro is considered the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music.

Originally choro was played by a trio of flute, guitar and cavaquinho (a small chordophone with four strings). Other instruments commonly played in choro are the mandolin, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. These melody instruments are backed by a rhythm section composed of 6-string guitar, 7-string guitar (playing contrapuntal bass lines known as ‘baixarias’) and light percussion, such as a pandeiro.

Our Sete Cordas model is perfect for musicians exploring Brazilian repertoire. This model has a low bass string (often tuned to C or B) to open up the harmonic possibilities for the player.
