Never content to idle, Fender’s Custom Shop sought to craft a new iteration of the timeless Tele, picking up where the Cabronita left off. Sweetwater’s guitar gurus are elated to report that the resulting Caballo Tono Ligero Relic is just as interesting and innovative as its ancestors. Translated from Spanish, this “Light Tone Horse” semi-hollowbody guitar features a stunning 1-piece, 3A flame maple neck and fingerboard, with 21 narrow-tall frets across a 9.5-inch fingerboard radius backed with a classic 10/56 “V” profile. A lightweight, 2-piece semi-hollow ash body sports a vaunted F-hole, yielding tremendous resonance. Chrome TV Jones humbuckers churn out a unique growl, darker than a traditional Tele’s single-coil siblings but crisp enough to complement the semi-hollow sonics. Fender locking tuners, a “sawed-off” RSD bridge, and vintage-style hardware deliver an enduring aesthetic befitting the tones you must take out for a ride.

Hand-selected sound with plenty of giddy up

The Fender Custom Shop hand selects its woods, ensuring you get the best possible sound. For the Caballo Tono Ligero Relic, they opted for ash with the 2-piece semi-hollow body, a tonewood known for its crisp character and bolstered by the ash’s hearty midrange and luscious bass. The 1-piece, 3A flame maple neck and fingerboard are imparted with powerful projection and reflective voicing, balancing crisp highs and warm lows with excellent note-separation. Taken together, these tonewoods work wonderfully alongside the resonance of the semi-hollow construction, producing glorious sustain throughout its well-articulated registers.

Sturdy, stable, ligero

Taking a piece out of Fender’s history, the 1-piece, 3A flame maple neck pairs light weight with structural resilience. The result delivers comfortable access and low-maintenance, thanks to its natural climate adaptability. The 10/56-style “V” profile will have thumb-over players feeling right at home, scaling all 21 narrow-tall frets of the fingerboard’s 9.5-inch radius. Vintage-style hardware includes a disc string tree and a bone nut, accompanied by Fender locking tuners that ensure you’ll stay in tune. Fun fact: this tone horse’s “ligero” designation is special to its semi-hollowbody construction, so you won’t find it on its solidbody sibling.

Taking up the mantle of the Cabronita’s heritage, TV Jones TV Classic humbucking pickups pump out a distinctive growl, nestled between the lightness of single-coils and the darker thickness of traditional humbuckers. Expertly blended high-end clarity, lively mids, and resonant lows are wired up to a 3-way switch with Fat ’50s wiring and 500k pots, creating a dynamic and responsive sound that’s both personal and timeless.
