The Gibson SG was introduced in 1961 as a complete replacement for the Les Paul. The new design was thought to be a more modern solidbody guitar, with sleek bevelled edges and two sharp cutaways. By late 1963, the Les Paul moniker was dropped, and the SG (or Solid Guitar) became an entirely separate model. The SG has remained in steady production ever since earning a place as one of the truly classic solid body guitars. Throughout the ’90s and into the 2000s, Gibson has produced a number of different production SGs, though the SG Standard has stayed largely the same.

From Gibson

In 1961 the Les Paul Standard received total overhaul, resulting in design that turned into what we now know as the SG. The new 2019 Gibson SG Standard ’61 retains the styling of the original featuring a slim taper mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The mahogany body features period correct, deeply sculpted body scarfing, 5-ply small early 60’s style pickguard as well as early 60’s style neck joint at the 22nd fret. Nickel-plated hardware, ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge and aluminium stop-bar tailpiece and Vintage Keystone tuners. The pickups are period correct 61R and 61T humbuckers for a classic PAF voice with added power and top end. Available in a classy gloss Vintage Cherry finish. This guitar has a Mahogany Body, Rosewood Fret-board, and utilises Burstbucker 61R and 61T with Vintage Deluxe Tuners with Keystone Buttons.
