When I purchased my first Fender Stratocaster in 1978, I thought how easy it was to tell a pre 1965 Fender Stratocaster, live on stage, in a magazine or in a film clip, with their small headstock. Compared to the lager Fender headstock manufactured from 1966 onwards, it took some getting use to the small peg heads and even smaller decals.
Even when Fender released “The Strat in 1980” with the small matching colour painted headstock, the shape of the peg head, together with the gold hardware made it easy to distinguish the guitars from the new and old.
In 1982 Fender released the Vintage reissue Stratocaster with the small headstock. Now that made spotting the new from the old a little more interesting. Though the rounded curve of the bottom of the peg (below the decal), it was still an easy giveaway to the trained eye.
Fast forward to the 2,000’s, with vintage Fender out of reach to most players, the time and effort put into Fender Custom Shop Relic guitars, makes it near impossible to spot the new from the old, live on stage, in a magazine or in a film clip. It is only easy if the price tag is left on ☺
With Fender Time machine guitars stepping up in value with the more work Fender put into ageing them, you are saving money with every mark you add to this amazing Fender Fiesta Red 1956 Relic!
